Site 1 = Overhill 49.9MW
(already approved + in construction)
The Overhill project is a Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) development was part of a joint venture between One Planet Developments Limited, Viridi RE, and Green Enesys Group.
Spanning approximately 3.6 hectares (9 acres), the project is strategically situated adjacent to the 33kV Rothienorman substation. The planning application for the project was submitted on 21st October 2022, with planning approval given in 1st March 2023.
The Overhill BESS project is currently in construction and is scheduled to come online in the fourth quarter of 2024.
The site has since been sold to Pulse Clean Energy for build and operation.
The project has a 40-year lease period.
The site went through planning as a 49.9MW site - but in reality it will have the capacity to store 110MW, which it will discharge to the grid over a 2 hour period.
Aberdeenshire Planning Application Number - APP/2022/2252

The fire brigade were called to the Overhill BESS site in 21st February 2025 as one of the battery containers was on fire.
The contractors were aware there was an issue with this battery container and had used the crane that was on site for the construction works to move the unit out of the way of the rest of the units - that is why it is on its own over to the left of this picture.
There was nothing that the fire brigade could do except to monitor the fire and ensure that it didn't spread - it is not possible to put out a lithium-ion battery fire.
